From Storage Closet to Zoom Room: How We Transformed a Forgotten Space into a Soundproof Sanctuary
At The Watchmaker’s Workspace, creativity isn’t just encouraged—it’s contagious. And sometimes, inspiration strikes in the most unexpected places, like under the stairs.
It all started on May 20, 2505, when Brenda, our ever-enthusiastic business owner, exclaimed, “Let’s get started on it now!” She was talking about turning our under-the-stairs storage closet into a quiet, private space for video and phone calls. And just like that, the transformation began.
Step 1: Out With the Old
I dove in headfirst—clearing out old paint cans, dismantling shelves, un-plumbing a tiny utility sink, and stripping out some truly tragic sheetrock. But then surprise! A puddle around the hot water heater. Cue the hero of our story: Dustin Welborn of Chechero Plumbing.
Dustin, the busiest and best plumber in town, dropped everything to help us out. He advised us to shut off the power, grabbed a new water heater, and worked late into the evening replacing brittle pipes and spaghetti-style water lines. He even installed a potable water expansion tank—because Dustin doesn’t just fix problems, he future-proofs them.
Step 2: Soundproofing & Styling
With the plumbing sorted, it was time to make this nook Zoom-worthy. We stripped wallpaper, removed rogue nails, and cleaned every inch. Then came the fun part:
Acoustic foam panels (which puffed up like marshmallows after opening), a three-speed fan with a built-in ring light (the rose setting is chef’s kiss for video calls), a thick curtain to hide the water heater and give an extra bit of sound dampening, quarter-inch foam mats custom-cut to fit around pipes, and a washable rug for comfort and style.
The ceiling was slanted (thanks, stairs), the walls weren’t square (thanks, old building), and the outlet was fried (thanks, time). But with some rewiring, gluing, stapling, and a bit of puzzle-solving, we made it work.
Step 3: The Hunt for the Perfect Door
Finding a door that fit was like searching for a unicorn. We needed something solid, sound-dampening, and just the right size. After a few failed attempts, Brenda struck gold at the Rabun County Fuller Center for Housing Thrift Store. It had hinges and everything!
Of course, the paint peeled off like a bad sunburn, so I stripped and sanded it down. The door frame was uneven (because not much is still square from 1880), so I brought in my saw, trimmed it, and added weather stripping for extra soundproofing. Then came the final touch: painting “Zoom Room” on the door.
The Final Result: A Cozy, Quiet Zoom Room
Now, our members have a cozy, quiet space to take calls, record videos, or just escape the buzz. And for non-members? We rent it out for $25 for two hours—a steal for peace and professionalism.
